Looshaus at Michaelerplatz

The Looshaus, on Vienna's Michaelerplatz in Vienna, built by Adolf Loos, does not only represent one of the most important chapters of Austria's history of architecture, but also serves as an example of a part of Austria's history of fashion.

Commissioned by Leopold Goldman, the famed manufacturer of clothes and patron of the arts, Adolf Loos began with the construction of an elegant and prestigious house for the flourishing tailor studio Goldman & Salatsch in 1909.

Situated in the heart of the city, between opulent neobaroque décor and romantic Art Nouveau façades, Loos's radical masterpiece triggered off a scandal among the citizens, but finally entered the history of architecture as an important bridge to modern art.

After the bankruptcy of Goldman & Salatsch in the middle of the twenties gradual deconstruction of the building ensued as a consequence of alternating property conditions.
